Level 5 Diploma Sports Massage Therapy

Course Content

  • Unit 1: Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, and Functional Anatomy

This unit provides an in-depth understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology as they relate to sports massage therapy. Look into the structure and function of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and other body systems. Explore common pathologies and injuries encountered in sports, as well as their implications for massage therapy. Functional anatomy is emphasised, focusing on how the body moves and functions during sports activities.

  • Unit 2: Complex Massage and Therapy Techniques for Sports

Unit 2 focuses on advanced massage and therapy techniques tailored specifically for sports-related conditions and injuries. Learn a wide range of complex techniques, including deep tissue massage, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation (IASTM). Acquire skills in applying these techniques effectively to address specific issues such as muscle imbalances, chronic pain, and overuse injuries commonly encountered in athletes.

  • Unit 3: Complex Assessment Methods in Therapy and Massage for Sports

This unit covers advanced assessment methods used in sports massage therapy to identify and evaluate musculoskeletal dysfunctions, imbalances, and injuries. Learn to conduct comprehensive assessments using a variety of techniques, including orthopaedic assessments, special tests, functional movement screening, and palpation skills. Develop the ability to analyse assessment findings and formulate individualised treatment plans to optimise athletic performance and prevent injuries.

  • Unit 4: Posture and Gait Analysis

Unit 4 focuses on analysing posture and gait patterns to assess movement biomechanics and identify potential issues contributing to musculoskeletal imbalances and injuries. Students learn how to perform detailed posture assessments and gait analysis, including observation of movement patterns, joint alignment, and muscle activation. They gain insights into how deviations in posture and gait mechanics can impact athletic performance and predispose individuals to injuries, and how sports massage therapy can be used to address these issues.

  • Unit 5: Ultrasound and Other Electrotherapy Modalities

In this unit, students explore the principles and application of ultrasound and other electrotherapy modalities in sports massage therapy. They learn about the physiological effects of ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and other electrotherapy modalities on soft tissues, including promoting tissue healing, reducing pain, and improving range of motion. Students also acquire practical skills in using ultrasound and electrotherapy equipment safely and effectively as adjuncts to manual therapy in sports rehabilitation settings.

  • Unit 6: Taping and Strapping in a Sports and Exercise Context

Unit 6 focuses on the principles and techniques of taping and strapping for injury prevention, support, and rehabilitation in sports and exercise contexts. Students learn various taping and strapping methods, including kinesiology taping, rigid taping, and functional taping techniques. They gain proficiency in assessing the need for taping or strapping based on individual client requirements and applying these techniques appropriately to enhance stability, reduce pain, and facilitate optimal movement patterns during sports activities.
